Ian Barnard

Ian Barnard's use of incoorapoating phtography wth typography has added a new element that I have never thought of, and given me real inspiration to use in my own work. The way inwhich he has cut out the image from the shape of the text and then added back certain elemnets, means a detailed yet unique image has been formed. As with Stephane Massa's work, the element of typography gives description to the image, linking the whole image together, however by uncovering certain parts of the image, it reflects ceratin elements intended to draw attension. The "Growth" image can be seen to represent how urban areas are increasing in size, and not nessaceraly using more land. The way in which the artist has uncovered the skyscrapers, shows how development is now in the form of height rather than width, and how it can gradually increase. This is similar with the "Wild" image, as it represents that at one time, the tree would have fitted within the typography, however over time, it has grown too tall, and therefore become different from the main image. I like this technique, as it shows both progression and detail, and gives a clear message throught each invidual piece.

Narrative photography is the idea that photographs can be used to tell a story. Allen Feldman stated that "the event is not what happens. The event is that which can be narrated" ~ Wikipedia
